Project – Environmental control and aesthetic sensitivity
Purpose – Wrapped, printed scaffolding
Location – Bisham Abbey, Buckinghamshire
Client – Connect Scaffolding
Product – Flame-retardant industrial shrink-wrap
After a previously successful collaboration at Eton College in Windsor, Connect Scaffolding once again recommended Tufcoat for a challenging and sensitive restoration shrink-wrap solution project. This time at the prestigious Bisham Abbey, a Grade I listed building of national historical importance. Recognising the benefits of shrink-wrap for environmental control and project efficiency, Connect Scaffolding brought Tufcoat on board to support the extensive roof and stonework conservation programme.
Preserving a national treasure
Bisham Abbey stands on the banks of the River Thames in Berkshire and has a lineage stretching back to the 13th century. First established as Bisham Priory, the site later evolved into a Tudor manor house and was home to prominent families such as the Montagues and the Hobys. Its architectural evolution reflects over 700 years of English history.
Today, Bisham Abbey serves a dual purpose: as a National Sports Centre and as an in-demand venue for weddings and events. The need to carry out urgent roof repairs while maintaining the venue’s visual appeal made this project particularly sensitive and required a carefully integrated temporary works solution.
The challenge
A leaking roof had begun to cause damage to the building’s interior and threatened long-term degradation of the historic structure. Connect Scaffolding installed a complex keder temporary roof system, providing access for the roofing specialists and conservation teams.
However, the site presented unique environmental and operational challenges:
- The building’s riverside location which exposed it to high humidity and adverse weather conditions
- The need to create a stable, controlled environment for the specialist stone masons restoring delicate sections of historic masonry
- The requirement to maintain a sympathetic aesthetic because the venue hosts weddings and high-profile events
- Strict expectations associated with working on a Grade I listed heritage site
To address these constraints, a robust and discreet encapsulation strategy was essential. Tufcoat were commissioned to wrap the sides of the roof scaffolding structure using our premium flame-retardant shrink-wrap sheeting. This created a fully sealed, weatherproof enclosure that allowed restoration specialists to work efficiently and safely regardless of external conditions.
Environmental containment
Tufcoat shrink-wrap provided a strong protective barrier, stabilising humidity and temperature levels inside the work zone. This was vital due to the close proximity to the River Thames, where moisture levels could otherwise disrupt delicate repairs. The encapsulation ensured that masonry repairs were protected from damp, wind, cold snaps and rain, supporting longevity and quality.
Seamless integration with temporary roofing
Tufcoat worked closely with Connect Scaffolding to ensure that the shrink-wrap perfectly integrated with the keder roof system, forming a continuous, durable envelope around the structure.
Sensitive restoration shrink-wrap solutions: Bespoke banners for a wedding venue
With Bisham Abbey functioning as a wedding venue throughout the works, maintaining visual appeal was a critical requirement. Tufcoat collaborated with topographical surveyors to utilise orthographic imagery, allowing us to design a series of custom-printed banners. These banners covered the tiered scaffolding supporting the temporary roof, helping to disguise the structure and preserve the iconic appearance of the abbey for guests and event photographers.
This thoughtful solution enabled the venue to continue hosting weddings without the temporary works becoming intrusive or distracting.
Tufcoat’s involvement helped ensure a controlled environment enabling uninterrupted conservation work and effective protection from riverside weather conditions. The visually sympathetic solutions meant weddings and public events could continue with minimal impact whilst the preservation of one of England’s most historically significant buildings took place.
The Bisham Abbey project involved a collaborative and coordinated approach between scaffolding, surveying and conservation specialists. It demonstrates Tufcoat’s ability to deliver technically robust and aesthetically sensitive restoration shrink-wrap solutions especially in heritage settings where protection, presentation and practicality must work seamlessly together.
