Shrink-wrap for transport protection – Type 26 Frigate sections

Project – Type 26 Frigate hull
Purpose –
Custom protective system for secure transport
Location –
Birkenhead to Govan Docks, Scotland
Client –
Denholm Industrial Services (DIS)
Product –
Flame retardant 190μm industrial shrink-wrap

Denholm Industrial Services (DIS) approached us regarding a complex requirement to design and install a protective covering for a Type 26 Frigate hull being transported from Cammell Laird Docks, Birkenhead to Govan Docks, Scotland. The purpose of the cover was to shield the hull during transit, using shrink-wrap for transport protection, ensuring its integrity and surface condition upon arrival.

Transporting a large vessel hull over a significant distance presented a range of logistical and structural challenges. A key concern was designing a durable covering system capable of withstanding the rigors of a sea journey. It was equally important to ensure that the protective sheeting was fully supported throughout the transport to prevent any risk of tearing or detachment.

Approach

We collaborated closely with DIS to design an innovative scaffold and sheeting system using flame retardant 190µm shrink-wrap tailored specifically for the hull’s dimensions and transport requirements. This provided consistent support for the sheeting to minimise any potential for damage due to wind resistance or mechanical stress during transport.

Execution

  • DIS led the on-site preparations and scaffold construction with efficiency and precision
  • Our Tufcoat team delivered expert design consultation and hands-on assistance during installation
  • The Cammell Laird team offered exemplary on-site support, enabling a seamless installation process

Results

  • Protective cover successfully installed on schedule and to precise specifications
  • Transport of the hull completed without damage or delay
  • The continuous collaborative approach between all stakeholders was crucial to the project’s streamlined completion and overall success

Tufcoat Contracts Manager Kieran Walsh, commenting on the project;

“This project showcases what we do best: solving complex challenges through collaboration, technical precision and tailored design. The streamlined cross-team communication and meticulous planning with Denholm Industrial Services and the team at Cammell Laird, meant that we achieved a durable and reliable protective solution that successfully met all the functional requirements.”
