Modular construction protection for Sainsbury’s micro fuel station

Tufcoat recently partnered with Williams Southern, one of the UK’s leading retail and forecourt construction contractors, to provide modular construction protection for prefabricated kiosk sections used in an innovative fuel station project for Sainsbury’s.

The project involved the rollout of a new model of Micro Fuel Stations, designed to offer a smaller footprint alternative to traditional petrol station builds. These compact stations are ideal for sites with space restrictions, where a full-scale forecourt would be impractical. This case study highlights how Tufcoat’s shrink-wrap solutions ensured the protection of modular units during transport, contributing to the overall success of the project.

Modular construction in retail infrastructure

As the construction industry embraces faster, more efficient building methods, modular construction is becoming increasingly popular, especially in sectors like retail, where speed to market and consistency are critical.

For this project, Williams Southern manufactured prefabricated kiosk modules that would form the main structure of the Micro Fuel Stations. These modules were constructed off-site in a controlled environment to achieve a high-quality finish and reduce time spent on location. However, one major challenge remained: how to protect these valuable modular units during long-haul transportation to the Sainsbury’s site.

The importance of modular construction protection

Each kiosk module measured approximately 2m (W) x 5.8m (L) x 5m (H), making them unsuitable for transport via conventional carriers or freight methods. Additionally, the units were pre-finished and ready for installation, so they required a protective solution that would preserve both the surface quality and structural integrity.

Unprotected transport could expose the units to weather, dust, road debris, and mechanical damage. With such high-value assets, even minor blemishes or impact damage could delay the project and increase costs.
That’s where Tufcoat’s modular construction protection services came in.

Our shrink-wrap solution

Tufcoat provided a bespoke shrink wrap solution using our 190-micron (190µm) shrink wrap, a heavy-duty plastic film engineered for industrial-grade protection.
Our expert installation team fully encapsulated each kiosk module with shrink wrap, creating a sealed, drum-tight enclosure. This layer of protection acts as a barrier against:
  • Rain, wind, and UV exposure
  • Dust, dirt, and pollutants
  • Mechanical abrasion or scratching during loading and unloading
  • General wear and tear from transport
The shrink wrap conforms tightly to the shape of the modules, preventing movement or flapping during transit and maintaining an aesthetically clean appearance on arrival. This is a key benefit of using shrink wrap for modular construction protection, it not only safeguards the structure but also ensures it arrives in presentation-ready condition.

Damage-free delivery and seamless installation

Thanks to Tufcoat’s modular shrink wrap protection, the kiosk modules were transported safely and arrived at the Sainsbury’s site with no reported damage. This allowed for immediate installation with no rework required, keeping the project on time and within budget. For Williams Southern and their client, this meant reduced risk, improved efficiency, and peace of mind—three critical factors in any modular build project.

Why modular construction protection matters

As modular construction continues to grow across the UK in sectors like retail, education, healthcare, and energy, the need for effective protection of prefabricated modules has never been more important. Damage during storage or transport can lead to delays, unexpected costs, and compromised quality.
Tufcoat’s shrink wrap services are tailored specifically for:
  • Modular buildings
  • Prefabricated kiosks and plant rooms
  • Off-site construction projects
  • Long-distance transportation of finished components
With over 20 years of experience, we provide shrink wrap solutions that meet the demands of modern modular construction—delivering cost-effective, durable, and visually clean protection for any project size.
