In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, high-value construction projects like data centres, research labs and clean rooms demand more than just standard protection. These specialised builds house sensitive equipment, complex systems and often involve critical infrastructure that must be shielded from environmental risks during construction.
Shrink-wrapping offers an efficient and secure construction weatherproofing solution for these demanding environments. At Tufcoat, we understand the stakes involved and tailor our approach to meet the highest standards. In this blog, we explore how shrink-wrap protects high-value builds and why it’s becoming the go-to method in sectors where precision and reliability matter most.
Why high-value builds need extra care
Unlike typical commercial or residential projects, data centres and labs require:
- Dust and contamination control: Even small particles can damage sensitive electronics or disrupt projects.
- Moisture and weather protection: Water ingress can cause catastrophic failures.
- Security and access management: Restricted sites need controlled access during construction.
- Temperature regulation: Protection from extremes helps maintain site conditions.
- Compliance with strict industry standards: Especially for pharmaceutical, biotech and IT infrastructure.
Traditional tarps or sheeting often fall short of these exacting requirements.
Construction weatherproofing advantages for sensitive projects
Shrink-wrap excels in these high-stakes environments due to its:
- Tight, custom fit: Forms a sealed barrier that keeps out dust, moisture and pollutants.
- Durable material: Resistant to weather and UV rays.
- Fire-retardant options: Certified shrink-wrap available for safety in sensitive and public areas.
- Visibility and access solutions: Customised access doors, vents and clear panels allow controlled entry and ventilation.
- Speed and efficiency: Quick installation reduces downtime and exposure to elements.
Real-world applications
Data centres
Protecting multi-million-pound data centres during build or retrofit is critical. Our shrink-wrap construction weatherproofing solutions, known as construction screens, prevent dust and moisture ingress, keeping internal environments stable and clean.
Pharmaceutical and research labs
Lab builds demand contamination control. Shrink-wrap construction screens can be fitted with vents and sealed access points to maintain cleanroom standards during construction.
Clean rooms and manufacturing facilities
Shrink-wrap construction screens maintain environmental integrity on site, preventing airborne particulates and moisture from affecting sensitive processes.
How do construction screens work?
Shrink-wrap screens require a timber sub frame to be fixed to the slab, ceiling or columns, depending on design.
Once in place the shrink-wrap sheet is fitted to the frame using a second layer of the engineered timber before finally shrinking the wrap.
Construction screens can follow any line inside the buildings envelope and can be cut in around protrusions creating a weatherproof barrier.
Working with Tufcoat: Custom construction screens
Every high-value build is unique, so we work closely with clients and project teams to:
- Develop custom framing and venting solutions
- Design secure access points and inspection windows
- Provide fire-retardant, certified construction weatherproofing tailored to site needs
- Offer on-site support for installation and ongoing maintenance
Case Study: Protecting a London Data Centre with construction screens
In early 2024, Tufcoat was commissioned by contractor Glencar to supply and install shrink‑wrap construction screens at the new LHR21 data centre in Acton, a 194,000 sq ft, six‑storey facility being built for Vantage Data Centres near Heathrow Airport. A delay to the cladding installation on one side of the building threatened to hold up internal fit‑out work, so the team provided a weatherproofing solution across five floors in five phases using over 3,000 m² of 300 µm shrink‑wrap screens. Installation ran from April through June and required flexibility and adaptability around shifting schedules and challenging, windy conditions at height.
Despite the logistical and environmental challenges, the screens were delivered on time, enabling internal works to proceed as planned and keeping the project on schedule. Glencar highlighted Tufcoat’s strong commitment to health and safety, with measures such as dust control via vacuum‑equipped drills and rigorous use of PPE throughout the installation.
High-value builds require high-performance protection. Shrink-wrap construction screens provide a robust, flexible and compliant construction weatherproofing solution that supports project success, reduces risk and preserves sensitive environments.
